At sentencing today, Othal Wallace was sentenced to 30 years in the shooting death of Daytona Beach Police Officer Jason Raynor. He was originally charged with First Degree Murder, but a jury found him guilty on manslaughter.
On June 23, 2021, Wallace, who was seated in a vehicle, when he was approached by Officer Raynor, who refused to explain to Wallace his reasons for questioning him. Wallace sudden ran off and a shot was fire, hitting Raynor in the head. Raynor was in coma for two months and later died. Wallace was subsequently arrested three days later in tree house in DeKalb County Georgia for First Degree Murder.
During sentencing, there were family members and colleagues, as well as Raynor's father, Todd Raynor who testified. Raynor's father testified to traumatic lost his son and how it affected everyone. He testified that Wallace should receive the maximum sentence.
Othal's mother, Jennifer Williams, and others, testified to Othal not being a bad person. Wallace also gave a heartfelt apology to the family.
Judge R. Zambrano, in sentencing, said that he sentenced Othal Wallace to 30 years due to his remarks he made about police officers on social media before and after Raynor's death.
Othal has 30 days to appeal his conviction and sentence.
