Rasheem Carter was working as a contractor in Taylorsville, MS (Smith County) at Georgia Pacific Chemical Plant. He was residing, temporarily, at a Motel 8. On October 1, 2023, Rasheem texted his mother saying he noticed a truck full of White men following him and yelling racial slurs. His mother told him to make an official police report, in which he did. Rasheem asked the police for a ride to his hotel because he felt unsafe, but police refused because it was 30 minutes outside its jurisdiction.
The next day, Rasheem went back to the police station to ask to use a phone charger to charge his low cell phone battery. The police told him that they didn't have a charger for his phone. He was told to go to the Family Dollar Store and buy a charger. He sent his mom his location, and she sent a friend to pick him up at the Family Dollar. However, when the friend arrived, Rasheem was not there.
The next day, on October 2, 2022, the family filed a missing person's report with Taylorsville Police Department. After several days of no sign of Rasheem, the family contacted Smith County Sheriff Department inquiring about Rasheem's missing person's report. The Smith County Sheriff Department said that they were not aware of a report or Rasheem's mysterious disappearance.
After three additional days without any information on Rasheem's whereabouts, the family went into town in search of clues or information about Rasheem's disappearance. They went to the Family Dollar and asked for the store's video footage of the night Rasheem visited the store. Family Dollar provided the video. When asked if the police had a copy of the video, the store manager told Rasheem's family that the police never inquired about any video footage of the night in question.
Almost a month later, a property owner in Taylorsville called the police department and notified them of an image of someone he didn't recognized. Taylorsville Police brought dogs out to search the area. They found body remains in a wooded area, located outside of Taylorsville. The discovered a severed skull and fragments of a vertebra. They believed it was the remains of Rasheem Carter.
After an examination of the remains, the examiner's reported the remains showed evidence of trauma and animals probably ate up some of Rasheem's body parts. The cause of death was listed as undetermined.
Smith County Sheriff Department, in a Facebook post, reported they didn't believe it was foul play, but couldn't rule it out.
During a protest, a protester wrote on the ground, "Rasheem's life mattered." Later that day, Taylorsville Police Chief posted a picture on Facebook, showing someone pressure washing the writing off the ground. He stated, "Just a little cleanup," with a hand wavering emoji.
The family believes Rasheem was murdered. In February 2023, the family organized a protest. They marched to Taylorsville Police Department, where a group of White men yelled at them and taunted them.
As of today, the family is still looking for answers. On Saturday, October 14, 2023, the New Black Panther Party (NBPP) is going to Taylorsville, MS to participate in a Protest Rally to demand law enforcement accountability and justice for Rasheem Carter.
The Justice Rally will be aired LIVE @MajorTv and @News-Facts-N--Comments YouTube Platforms: https://www.youtube.com/live/pSRgLPBRi2M?si=DyKj9Vsc_58yxDXQ
