The fight between Terence "Bud" Crawford, WBO Welterweight Champion versus Errol "The Truth" Spence Jr, the unified WBC, WBA, and IBF Welterweight Champion is finally happening on July 29th, 2023.
The well-awaited announcement really wasn't a surprise considering they were in talks of fighting last year. After they couldn’t come to an agreement, Bud went on to fight David Avanesyan, knocking him out in the 6th round with a left upper cup and right hook in December of last year.
Spence hasn't fought since stopping Yordenis Ugas in the 10th round in April of 2022, stripping Ugas of WBA Welterweight title-uniting all three of the welterweight titles in their respective division.
With his focus on Crawford's WBO belt, Spence said in several interviews that he always had his eyes on taking Crawford's WBO belt. He previously expressed that, once he clean out the division and take the other belts, he was coming for Crawford. In fact, Spence refused to fight Keith "One Time" Thurman (that could have possibly been set up for late last year if the fight with Crawford didn't pull through). However, Spence's aim was always focused on dethroning Terence "Bud" Crawford and becoming the first 147 pound, undisputed welterweight champion of the world.
Crawford is regarded as the #1 P4P boxer in boxing with Spence regarded as #2 - #4, or possibly #1. The winner of this fight will be crowned the #1 P4P fighter in boxing.
At first, there was a lot of miscues in the reporting of the fight, social media platforms going back-n-forth, and the fans feuding over who will win. This fight had been brewing for nearly 4 years. It has created a serious craze and buzz among the media and fans, anticipating seeing both fighters in the ring for a major showdown.
Social media and the fans have contributed much buzz and debates about this fight. The fight is happening! Everyone is talking about the Crawford-Spence saga.
COULD CRAWFORD-SPENCE FIGHT LIVE UP TO THE HYPE
This fight has been mentioned and compared to the likes of "Sugar" Ray Leonard and Thomas "Hit Man" Hearns wars in the 80s, which left fans cringing in their seats each round of their fights. The back and forth wars between these legends were amazing for that era like Crawford and Spence could be for this era.
If this fight with Crawford and Spence, which have rematch clauses, lives up to the hype of Leonard and Hearns super-fights, where they fought twice (their first fight ended with Leonard winning by a TKO and their second fight turned into a draw.), we are in for a helluva ride.
Both fighters have a high knock out ratio and have never lost a professional fight. Their IQs are very high. Crawford is very slick, crafty, can switch stands, box, and brawl if needed. Spence is very fundamental, technical, and decisive with his punches. Though Spence has shown he can box when he defeated Mickey Garcia, he prefers to go straight at boxers to test their will and heart.
THE WINNER WILL MAKE HISTORY
They are boxing to make history, to be legends, to be great, and to be the best fighter in boxing.
No one has ever been undisputed at the welterweight division in the four-belt era. On July 29th, that will change when both fighters clash to determine who will be crowned as the king of the division.
Crawford did experience becoming undisputed at super lightweight in August of 2017, but it was short lived. He has been here before, but not under these circumstances.
Although he started fighting in the lightweight division and became the WBO champion before conquering the super lightweight division, when he moved up to the welterweight division, attacks on his resume became an issue in the boxing world.
Spence and his trainer, Derrick James, consistently criticized Crawford's resume. This was followed by the same sentiments shared among the media, other fighters, and the fans. This created a big division in boxing like we never seen before.
Nonetheless, this undisputed boxing match between Crawford and Spence is under a larger microscope. Nothing can be left to chance. Both fighters have to approach this fight like this is their final fight, leaving it all in the ring.
Unfortunately, someone "0" got to go.
We shall see on July 29th, 2023 in Las Vegas, Nevada, at the T-Mobile Arena when they meet in the ring to determine who will make history and become the first 147-pound welterweight boxer to become the undisputed champion of the division and crowned the #1 P4P fighter in the world.
